Cathedral of the Assumption, Pula
Cathedral of the Assumption in Pula was built on the foundations of an ancient edifice, at the place where Christians used to gather even during the church persecution. In time it became larger and larger and finally in the 5th century it obtained the form of today’s church.
The oldest preserved parts of the church walls from the beginning of the 4th century are visible from the outside: lower part of the wall belongs to that period. Because of the fire in 1242 the church has been changed on several occasions. Upper windows of the central nave were made in the early Christian period while the windows of the side naves have typical Gothic appearance.
The church of St Toma, patron of the town, built in the 5th century stood east of the cathedral, in the place of today’s small park, till 1657. After it was destroyed in the Middle Ages it hasn’t been restored; the last superficial traces were still visible in 1812.
