Hercules’ Gates, Pula
Hercules´ Gates, built in the middle of the 1st c B.C., are the oldest preserved monument of the Roman architecture in Pula. Surrounded by two medieval circular towers the Hercules’ Gates seem quite modest.
It's decorated with a relief showing the head of Hercules, the patron of the ancient town of Pola, and his club. Hercules was, in Roman times, the patron of Pula so in one inscription Pula is mentioned as COLONIA IULIA POLA POLLENTIA HERCULANEA.
