Roman theatre, Pula
In Roman times apart from its famous amphitheatre Pula had another two theatres, one outside the town, from which not much was left, and the other, smaller one within the town walls. So called small Roman theatre was built around the 1st c. on the north-east slope of the hill, at the foot of Kaštel.
It was much bigger than what is visible today because archaeological research hasn’t been finished yet. The Theatre space was divided into the architectonic stage and proscenium, where the actors played, the orchestra space and the semicircular auditorium which could receive up to 5 000 spectators.
The remains of foundations of the scene building and parts of the auditorium, which have been partly restored, have been preserved out of the small Roman theatre.
Under the theatre there’s the building of former German language school which, since 1930, hosts the Archaeological Museum of Istria with its rich collection of prehistoric, antic and early medieval monuments from the whole Istria.
