Sergius Triumphal Arch, Pula

Sergius Triumphal Arch or the “Golden Gates” is an exquisite architectonic work of the late Hellenistic Roman building from the end of the 1st c. B.C. This edifice of magnificently harmonious proportions and execution, and rich decorations was erected by a patrician woman from Pula - Salvia Postuma, from the family Sergius, which she had made of her own money in honour of three members of her family who had fought in the famous battle of Actium.

The Arch has triumphal and honorary character and is one of the rare arches which were erected in honour of private persons and are not connected to the emperors’ cult. In past the Arch had a strong impact on Renaissance building which was based on ancient ideals. Today, in the small square next to the Arch different cultural events – theatrical and choir, take place, and in the street there are many shops.
