Temple of Augustus, Pula
Augustus’ Temple is an extremely beautiful edifice dedicated to the goddess Roma and the first Roman emperor, the great Octavian Augustus.
Built between 2 B.C. and 14 A.D., when Augustus died, this temple is considered as one of the most beautiful Roman monuments. After the antic period the temple served as a church, then it was the grain storage, later on the museum of stone monuments, and today it hosts the exhibition of Roman stone sculptures.
In the Second World War Augustus’ temple was directly hit by an aircraft bomb which exploded in the portico and almost destroyed the temple. Italian archaeologists restored the temple between 1945 and 1947.
